University Heights is the district built around not paying for a ride. Twenty-five rooms sit in the neighborhood around UB's South Campus, four of them run to 4am, and exactly two post a cover - $5, at The Steer after 10pm Thursday through Saturday and Average Joe's after 11pm on weekends. Everything else is free at the door. That combination is the entire case for the Heights over Chippewa on a weeknight.
The late four
The Steer and Average Joe's are the two that matter to most students - both post a 4am close Thursday through Saturday, both are minutes from South Campus on foot, and both are $5 at the door during their late window. Gordy's Inn posts 4am seven nights a week.
One step earlier: JP's Checkers and Transit Tap close at 3:30am, and Jolly Jug and Colonie Lounge at 3. There is more open past 2am within walking distance here than in any district except Chippewa.
The earlier tier
Not every Heights night needs to end at 4. The 33 Speakeasy Grill closes at 2, Pandora's at 1, and Brick House Tavern, Brunner's Tavern and Snyder Bar and Grill at midnight. These are the rooms for a night that has to survive a 9am lecture.
The math nobody does out loud
A round trip to Chippewa is a rideshare each way, and at 3am on a Saturday the return leg is the expensive one. The Heights version of the same night costs $5 at the door and a walk. Over a semester that difference is not small, and it is the reason the Heights runs hot on the meter most weekends regardless of what is happening downtown.
The flip side is honest too: this is a smaller district with fewer rooms, and when the Heights is dead it is properly dead. Check before you commit - and if the first stop is wrong, everything else here is a two-minute walk.
Getting home is the actual point
Walking distance is the district's whole selling point, so use it deliberately rather than accidentally. Walk with people and keep to lit streets. UB Police run a campus escort service at 716-645-2222 - put it in your phone now rather than looking it up at 3am.

One rule for the Heights
Everything here is 21+ and the doors card properly - the $5 cover rooms in particular. That is not a Lineup policy, it is the law and these bars enforce it. Bring real ID or the walk is wasted.
