Buffalo bars open until 4am: the actual list

August 7, 2026 · Buffalo · Late night · Hours

New York State last call is 4am, and 39 of the rooms in our Buffalo directory post a close that actually reaches it. They are not spread evenly: nine sit on Chippewa, six in Allentown, six on Elmwood, five in South Buffalo, four in the Heights, and four on Hertel. Almost all of them only run that late Thursday through Saturday - the same bar closes at midnight on a Tuesday. Below is the real list, by district, pulled from the hours on each bar's own listing.

One caution worth stating up front: posted hours are the plan, not a promise. A slow Thursday gets cut short and no one updates a listing. Tonight's board shows which of these rooms actually has people in it right now, which is the part a posted closing time can never tell you.

Chippewa: nine rooms to 4am

The densest concentration of late doors in the city, which is most of why the strip exists. Bottoms Up, SoHo Buffalo and 67 West run Thursday through Saturday; Rec Room, VENU, The Cowboy, Bada Bing and Buffalo Tap House hold the line Friday and Saturday.

Worth knowing before you commit: this is also the district where a door charge is normal rather than notable. Bottoms Up posts $10 after 11pm on Friday and Saturday, Rec Room $10 after 10, SoHo $5 after 10. The cover post has the full schedule, and the Chippewa guide goes room by room.

Allentown: six, and one of them every night

Allen runs late without running expensive. Nietzsche's, Billy Club and Tudor Lounge go to 4am Thursday through Saturday, Duke's on Friday and Saturday, and The Alley Cat adds Wednesday.

The outlier is Mulligan's Brick Bar, which posts a 4am close seven nights a week - the only room in the directory that does it outside the casino and the cabarets. If the question is strictly "where can I still be at 3:30 on a Tuesday," that is the answer.

Elmwood: six, and later than people expect

Elmwood reads like a neighborhood avenue and closes like a strip. Cole's, Mr. Goodbar, Thirsty Buffalo, Milkie's, High Violet and Forty Thieves all reach 4am - Goodbar from Wednesday on, which is the widest late window on the avenue. Two of them post a cover: Milkie's $5 after 9pm on weekends, Goodbar $5 after 11. Full district writeup in the Elmwood guide.

The Heights, Hertel, South Buffalo

The Steer and Average Joe's carry University Heights to 4am Thursday through Saturday, which combined with the walk home is the whole argument for drinking near South Campus - more in the South Campus guide.

Hertel keeps four late rooms, and two of them - Del Denby Tavern and M.T. Pockets - post 4am every night of the week. South Buffalo answers with five, including Steel City Pub and Talty's Tavern on an all-week schedule. Neither district posts a cover anywhere.

Late is not the same as busy

A 4am license means a room is allowed to be open, not that anyone is in it. Plenty of these bars are genuinely empty by 2:30 on a weeknight, and the posted hours will never say so - the staff just stops replacing the crowd that left.

That gap is the entire reason the crowd meter exists: reports from people standing inside the room in the last 45 minutes, weighted and location-checked. Check the board before the last leg of the night, and if the room you are in is dying, move the crew together instead of splitting three ways at 2am.

See it live tonight.
