Most Buffalo bars charge nothing at the door, most nights. Cover shows up in three places: the Chippewa strip on Friday and Saturday ($5–10, switching on between 10 and 11pm), rooms with a stage when there's a show ($7–20, and that's the ticket, not the bar), and the Heights late on weekend nights ($5). Lineup shows the current cover on every card, live - so this post is the pattern, and the app is tonight's exceptions.
The weekend switch
Chippewa covers aren't constant - they switch on at a posted hour, which means timing is money. From the actual schedules: Bottoms Up goes to $10 after 11pm Friday and Saturday ($5 on Thursdays), Rec Room is $10 after 10, SoHo is $5 after 10, and The Lodge is $5 after 11. Over on Elmwood, Mr. Goodbar runs $5 after 11 and Milkie's $5 after 9 on weekends.
Walk in twenty minutes before the switch and you keep the ten. Bottoms Up literally posts "$5 before 11" as a special - the door is telling you the move. Get there early, or budget the cover as part of the night.
Show rooms are a different animal
Town Ballroom at $20, Mohawk Place at $12, Buffalo Iron Works at $15, Nietzsche's at $7 after 9 - those aren't bar covers, they're bills. You're paying for whoever's on stage, and the drinks are usually kinder to make up for it: Mohawk does $3 PBR tallboys during any show, Iron Works pours $5 local drafts on show nights. Check who's playing before you grumble. And Nietzsche's Blues Monday is free, which is the best deal in live music in this city.
Heights math
The Steer charges $5 after 10pm Thursday through Saturday; Average Joe's is $5 after 11 on weekends. Five dollars for the most reliably packed room within walking distance of South Campus is the cheapest admission in Buffalo - and on Steer Thursday the $3 bombs pay the cover back by midnight. Do the pitcher math before you call any cover a ripoff.
How to not get surprised
The whole playbook, five lines:
Check the card before you leave the pregame - Lineup shows the scheduled cover and updates when someone at the door reports a change. "Cover just went up" is literally a report tag.
Beat the switch hour. Ten to eleven is the golden window on Chippewa.
Weeknights are nearly free citywide - Wednesday and Thursday covers are rare outside show rooms and College Thursday doors.
Allen and Elmwood mostly stay at $0. Duke's DJ nights are free before midnight.
Carry a little cash. Some doors run cash-only late - "Cash only tonight" is another tag reporters use.
The one rule
If the door and the app disagree, one of two things happened: the price just changed, or the bar hasn't updated its schedule. Either way, you're standing within 150 meters - report it and the number fixes itself for the whole street. Bars that run their own dashboard keep this honest from their side: when the cover changes at 11, the map says so at 11.
